The social work profession has advocated for marginalized groups in American society for years. Unfortunately, sometimes we may forget that the political arena plays a huge part in the social work profession. With marginalized groups facing unjust treatment it is crucial that social workers have a role in the policies that are created for individuals, whether these individuals are living in impoverishment or whether they are lacking resources due to lack of agency. Jansson(2018), empathizes the importance of social workers becoming policy advocates. By becoming a policy advocate, social workers are able to help establish policies that are more humane for those who lack representation. As a social worker it is crucial that we advocate for groups who are not thought of when making policies that affect them.
